Qualifications for Application

A committee of local Hispanic business leaders, including educators from Marymount University, review all nominations and select the awardee by majority vote of the committee members.

  1. For the purposes of this award, “Hispanic” or “Latino” teachers are those who classified themselves in one of the specific Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino categories listed on the Census 2000 questionnaire.
  2. Candidates must be fluent in Spanish and English.
  3. Nominees must have have taught at least five years in Northern Virginia public schools and currently teach PK-12 classes in any of the following Northern Virginia school districts: Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Fauquier County, Fredericksburg City, Loudoun County, Manassas City, Manassas Park, Prince Williams County, and Stafford County.
  4. The nominee must demonstrate a superior ability to impart knowledge to students and to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities to learn.
  5. Nominee must be an exceptionally skillful and dedicated teacher who is planning to continue in an active teaching status.
  6. Nominee must have the respect and admiration of students, parents, and co-workers, and should play active and useful roles in their communities and schools.
  7. Nominees should demonstrate a willingness to devote time and energy to activities that result in improved instruction for children.
  8. Nominees should demonstrate a desire to keep abreast of current educational theories and practices through continued staff development and by attending workshops and seminars in their particular areas of teaching.
  9. Nominees should demonstrate the ability and willingness to contribute to the field of education by conducting seminars and workshops and by being involved in training and assisting fellow teachers in their professional development.
